Mathematical models

Global Omnium/Aguas de Valencia is a pioneer in network management with real time hydraulic simulation models, monitoring the operation and control of a complex network such as the Supply System of the Metropolitan Network of València, 1.5 million people and 3,000 Km of piping.

Modern management of water supplies increasingly requires the use of mathematical models of hydraulic simulation, given the complex environment of pipes, tanks and regulatory elements that are necessary to ensure the transport of water from supply sources to the subscriber end, under suitable pressure and quality.

Hydraulic models reproduce the actual behavior of the distribution of water, so they are a useful tool for understanding and predicting the state of the network under different scenarios of consumption or operations.

Since 1993, Global Omnium/Aguas de Valencia has a model of the supply network of València. Since then, progress has been continuous through the model integration with other management tools of the company, such as the Geographic Information System (GIS) that contains the data of all elements of the potable water network and later with the Control System and Data Acquisition (SCADA) that allows daily control of the hydraulic system from a central operation station.

At present, the mathematical model operates in parallel to SCADA, simulating the behavior of the network in real time, allowing also reproducing the behavior of the system at any past time, and even future to predict the response of the network in the next 24 hours. The mathematical model has thus become a true network simulator in real time.

Indeed, the connection of the mathematical model with the SCADA network operation, allowing to simulate the system behavior under any circumstances, acts as a Support System for Decision Making (DSS).

At present, Global Omnium/Aguas de Valencia in operation a mathematical model connected in real time with SCADA, integrating over 800 hydraulic variables, which, for its innovative component, has been published in several national and international congresses.
